In this blog post, we’ll delve into the evidence-based benefits of meditation and the results you can expect from a regular meditation practice in both motherhood and your wider life.
In the hustle and bustle of modern motherhood, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and stretched thin. Between managing household chores, attending to the needs of little ones, and perhaps even juggling a career, finding a moment of peace can seem like an impossible dream. However, in this ‘rush hour of life’, there’s a practice that holds immense promise: meditation.
What is Meditation?
Meditation is an ancient practice that involves focusing the mind and eliminating distractions to achieve a state of mental clarity and emotional calm. It’s not about turning off your thoughts or emotions but rather observing them without judgment and finding a state of peace within.
Whether you’re a seasoned meditator or a curious beginner, here’s why meditation deserves a prominent place in your daily routine.
The Benefits of Meditation
The benefits of meditation are not just anecdotal; they are backed by a growing body of scientific research. Here are some of the key benefits of meditation, supported by evidence:
- Stress Reduction
Stress is an unwelcome companion for most moms. The good news? Meditation has been scientifically proven to reduce stress levels. A research review published in JAMA Internal Medicine in January 2014 found meditation helpful for relieving anxiety, pain, and depression. When we meditate, our bodies release less cortisol—the infamous stress hormone. Chronic stress can contribute to headaches, anxiety, depression, heart disease, and even premature death. Meditation helps minimize these effects by inducing a state of deep relaxation.
- Improved Sleep Quality
Sleep is crucial for your overall well-being, yet many mums struggle with insomnia or restless nights (in addition to being woken up by little ones). Meditation can help improve sleep quality. A study conducted by Harvard Medical School found that a mindfulness-based stress reduction program helped participants fall asleep faster and enjoy more restful sleep.
- Boosted Immune System
A robust immune system is essential for keeping up with our little ones, who, come autumn, will inevitably bring all kinds of germs home to us from daycare and school. Meditation supports immune function by reducing inflammation and enhancing immune cell activity. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine highlights these immune-boosting effects.
- Emotional Resilience
Motherhood comes with its share of emotional roller coasters. Meditation can enhance your emotional well-being by promoting a positive outlook on life. Research published in Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging demonstrated that mindfulness meditation increases the density of grey matter in the brain regions associated with emotional regulation and self-awareness. This can help you manage your emotions better and respond to challenges with greater resilience.
- Enhanced Focus and Concentration
Ever feel like your brain is a scattered puzzle? As a mum, your attention is often pulled in multiple directions. Meditation can improve your ability to concentrate and stay focused. A study in the journal Psychological Science revealed that just two weeks of mindfulness training improved participants’ working memory and cognitive flexibility. This means you can stay more present and attentive in your daily tasks.
The Ripple Effect of Meditation
As you begin to incorporate meditation into your daily routine, you’ll likely notice a ripple effect that extends beyond your own well-being. Here’s how meditation can positively impact your family life and beyond:
- Improved Patience and Understanding:
Meditation fosters a sense of inner calm and patience, which can help you respond to your children with greater empathy and understanding. This can lead to more harmonious relationships and fewer conflicts at home. - Role Modelling:
By practicing meditation, you set a positive example for your children. They learn the importance of self-care and mindfulness by observing your commitment to these practices. Over time, they may even become interested in meditating themselves. - Enhanced Family Bonding:
Incorporating mindfulness into family activities, such as mindful eating or nature walks, can strengthen your bond with your children. These shared experiences promote a sense of connection and presence in the moment. - Professional Benefits:
Meditation can also extend its benefits into your professional life. Improved focus, reduced stress, and enhanced emotional regulation can make you more effective at work, whether you’re managing a business, working from home, or balancing a part-time job. The clarity and calmness you cultivate through meditation can help you tackle work challenges with greater ease and efficiency.
My Own Meditation Practice
If you have been following me for some time, you’ll know that I call meditation my (not-so) secret weapon. Since 2014, I usually meditate 15 minutes daily, cross-legged on my sofa with my favourite blanket wrapped around me, first thing in the morning before anyone is up.
On hectic days, I shorten it to 5 minutes, which I consider my absolute minimum self-care. The handful of times a year I don’t meditate at all, I notice how it changes the trajectory of my day, and I regret not having made the time for it.
How to Get Started with Meditation
The hardest part is overcoming the common myths that may be stopping you from starting to meditate and getting into a regular habit. I faced these challenges a decade ago when I joined a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program in Geneva, Switzerland. That experience was transformative for me, and now I offer a similar program, Mindful Parenting, to support busy parents in finding calm and balance in their lives.
Conclusion
The evidence is clear: meditation can reduce stress, improve emotional health, enhance focus, promote better sleep, and even boost immunity. By carving out a few moments each day for this transformative practice, you can navigate the challenges of motherhood and life with greater ease and joy.
Remember, it’s not about perfection but about making a commitment to your well-being. Start small, be consistent, and watch as the benefits of meditation unfold in your life.
