What Is Mindful Parenting?

This 8-week course is designed to teach mindfulness to parents.

Mindful Parenting was originally developed by Prof. Susan Bögels at the University of Amsterdam. It is based on the proven effective mindfulness trainings of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

At the heart of this course lies mindfulness training. Mindfulness is clear, non-judgmental awareness that allows us to perceive and accept all experiences—whether pleasant or unpleasant—with curiosity and kindness.

For parents, this can include:

Or, based on the definition of Jon Kabat-Zinn:

Mindful parenting is not a fixed destination; it’s an ongoing, creative journey. It invites us to intentionally cultivate non-judgmental awareness in every moment. This awareness extends to both our inner world—our thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations—and the outer world of our children, family, home, and broader cultural context.

How Mindfulness Helps with Parenting Stress

In this course, you will develop:

  1. Deep Awareness: You attune to our child’s unique nature, feelings, and needs. This sensitivity allows you to respond with empathy and understanding.
  2. Present Listening: You learn to truly listen, giving your full attention to your children. In doing so, you create a space for authentic connection.
  3. Radical Acceptance: You embrace things as they are, whether pleasant or challenging. This acceptance frees you from unnecessary struggle and allows you to meet each moment with grace.
  4. Skillful Responses: Recognising your own reactive impulses, you choose to respond imaginatively and with kindness. This clarity helps you navigate parenting challenges more effectively.
Remember, mindful parenting isn’t about perfection; it’s about presence. By weaving mindfulness into our parenting, we create a nurturing environment for both ourselves and our children.
